Background

Australia has implemented a nicotine regulation back in October 2021 that requires buyers to get a valid prescription from a health clinic or general practitioner in order to import any containing nicotine-liquids into Australia.

About the survey

The survey aims to know how’s the current market situation in Australia after the new nicotine regulation and how it has affected Australian Vapers in their Nicotine consumption and Vape use in general.

About the Respondents

We’ve sent out the Survey via Email to over 10,000 Australian Vapers from our existing Customer Database and 12% came out to participate and answer. These respondents are existing Nicotine users who have bought or have been buying off nicotine from our website/s.

About the Surveyor

HILIQ is a world trusted nicotine supplier who have been serving the Australian market for almost a decade. Its core products include Nicotine bases and salts, nicotine liquids and booster shots, and all-around Vaping DIY solutions.

RESULTS

The first part of the survey reveals the respondents’ buying habits, current nicotine usage and their awareness of the regulation prior its implementation.

In Australia, 61.6% of buyers are mixing Nicotine with E-liquids on their own. This means that they are usually buying off high density nicotine to D-I-Y it with their non-nicotine e-liquids. 38.4% of buyers are using pre-mixed e-liquids or ready-to-vape, nicotine containing e-liquids.

38.4% of buyers are using pre-mixed e-liquids or ready-to-vape, nicotine containing e-liquids.

The majority of users are also buying Nicotine base at a massive turn-out of 85.1% compared to the buyers of Nicotine Salt which is only at 14.9%. While both is a nicotine substance derived from Natural tobacco, the latter is mixed with an Acid and is used mainly for POD devices.

Almost half of the respondents, at 49.5%, knew the details of the regulation through the Vaping Community - which includes Forums and Social Media groups. 35.9% of them found HILIQ Emails and service as useful in disseminating information as it came in second. Vape Shop was also a source of information with 8.9% while a word-of-mouth advice from a Friend garnered 5.7%.

The second part of the survey reveals the respondents' current nicotine stock level and the actions they’ve taken before the implementation of the Nicotine regulation.

The early announcement of the Nicotine Ban allowed customers to prepare their stocks in advance, not to mention, somehow panic as it gets closer to its implementation date. We adjusted our Annual Free Shipping event in order to accommodate the needs of our Australian customers, thus, 68% of customers bought off lots of nicotine supplies from HILIQ as they gear up nearing the regulation. 32% of customers also stocked up as many nicotine as they can from different brands.

5 months after the October Nicotine Ban, 36.3% of customers say they still have a lot of Nicotine in their hands, while 31% admitted they are already running low. 19.9% will be buying new stocks soon as they are already very low in stock and the rest of the 12.8% have still very plenty, it could last them a year.

The third and last part of the survey shows the respondents’ thoughts about getting a prescription and how the policy affected their nicotine consumption and vaping use in general.

The third and last part of the survey shows the respondents’ thoughts about getting a prescription and how the policy affected their nicotine consumption and vaping use in general.

A massive 81.5% of Australian respondents think that it is very hard and inconvenient to get a prescription. While 18.5% believes that it is only right to do and easy to get.

Prescription is expensive - this reason gets 16.7% why Australian customers are still not willing to get one. 6.8% have no doctor or known clinics, while 11.4% doesn’t know the process of obtaining a prescription. 36.3% answered of all the 3 mentioned above, and 28.8% can’t pin point yet why they do not want to get a prescription for now.

Those who already have prescriptions, only 15.3% have gotten theirs because they needed nicotine. 2.8% have their own doctor and 1.4% got their local vape shops to assist them. HILIQ prescription board was a good help in getting one at 5% and 4.6% answered all of the above. The number of those who does not have yet a prescription is at a whooping 70.8%.

After the implementation of the new nicotine regulation, 61.6% have not yet bought any nicotine ever since while 8.2% have completely stopped buying it. 13.5% of respondents are continually buying nicotine while 16.7% are considering to buy some again.

Overall, the Australian Nicotine Regulation has somehow affected at least 23.1% of our customers and buyers, and 30.6% of the respondents was found to be totally affected. However, majority of them, at 46.3%, said that the Australian Nicotine Regulation did not affect their nicotine use and Vaping use in general.

We've also asked our respondents to tell us in writing what they think about the Nicotine Regulation imposed by the TGO Australia. Though the responses are not surprising as many were unhappy and disappointed about it, we also got a mixed bag of some of the respondents being okay with it.

Let’s share some of the ‘somehow’ positive opinions toward it:

"The vaping laws are probably OK for now. Adjustments should be made after there is more medical information available on the long term effects of vaping.”

"The whole thing is st**id. You don't need a prescription for cigarettes or even other quit smoking aids like nicorette. Before the law came into effect I bought enough to last a couple of years and when that gets low I'll consider what the options are."

"Having to get a prescription for nicotine, when you can buy cigarettes over the counter without one is, completely id**tic and a backwards step towards the future of people being able to access vaping products to cease smoking. The rest of the world seems to be encouraging vaping, but Australia is punishing it."

"As a traveler who is currently working in a rural area it is inconvenient and expensive to arrange a nicotine prescription. This has led me to start buying cigarettes again until I have the time and in a location to arrange a prescription. Overall I much prefer the vaping experience and the health benefits. But I have a nicotine dependency and unfortunately it is much easier to buy a pack of smokes then organize a prescription as I don’t have much free time due to work. Basically I started smoking cigarettes again after I ran out of nicotine and realized it was inconvenient to get a prescription. I am hoping to get back on the vapes again ASAP. Ps. You guys have always been awesome with your quality and great prices "

We’re also touched by some of the respondents’ comments toward our service so let us share some here and offer them our sincerest gratitude.

"The process of getting a script as recommended by Hiliq was easy and the Australian doctor was very quick to respond and helpful. I now have a script when I order more nicotine but I stocked up so much that I won't need to order any for quite a while. Thanks Hiliq"
